Hi all,
We are pleased to announce that Mininova is testing a new technology which allows users to download and watch licensed movies and TV shows for free. These videos will be packaged by Hyper MP technology and are going to be distributed using Mininova Content Distribution for free. The unique feature of this system is that the videos can be downloaded and played anywhere in the world (no geo-targeting), and will make use of a new in-video advertising technology.
The first beta test release for this technology trial is an amateur feature length comedy titled “Battle Therapy”. The film, produced by Australian film school students, is a wacky comedy about an unorthodox psychologist and his obsessive compulsive patients.
Make sure to check our this movie by downloading the following torrent: http://www.mininova.org/tor/2020297. The movie is packaged in a Windows executable and is free of viruses and DRM, so don’t let that deter you from downloading it. After viewing the movie, please feel free to send feedback on your experience with this technology to feedback@hypermp.com.
Please note that this first release is a trial only and it is not representative of the quality of feature length content that will follow upon the official release of the service. In order to assist in polishing the technology, all the feedback you are willing to provide will be greatly appreciated.
That’s it for now, stay tuned for more updates soon!
I am sorry for any kind of missuse
Come on guys. How many times have you downloaded a .exe file from let’s say Microsoft?
You saved it and had no problem to open the .exe right?
Because you trust Microsoft?
You don’t get those movies from some weird site or P2P client. You get it from a trusted site, so what is the prob?
I admit it’s sad all Mac and Linux users are left out. I also use a Mac to watch movies. It would be possible to make it platform-independant. I.e. with Java – this way also the security issue would be solved since Java apps can be run in a sandbox.

What’s the problem??
Have a read of my comments 5 posts above yours. The problems are many and varied.
I would say you’re far too trusting. Don’t ever join the boy scouts or become an altar boy.
to all at mininova
dont do it please people i use your site to watch movies and tv stuff so i dont have to watch bloody adverts as they bug the hell out of me …..and as i also work with pcs {windoze} and linux based systems you will only make people like me work harder for the simple reason is anyone who works with pcs always tells there clients NEVER download a .exe file so please dont do it…..and if you are going to push this through you will lose a lot of users overnight and then we all lose……. you most of all as if theres no users you wont earn anything from the people who pay for ads and then kiss the site GOODBYE simple

Well, on the one hand it’s a fine idea to open things up by allowing everyone to legally down and watch those flicks – this was proven the right way-thats what I think is the mininova spirit.
On the other hand you must see how you’re trying to get there-and thats not very progressive. I might want to say those developers tried by all means not to completely miss this trend but they were just too lazy to come up with sumpn new. What they deliver is that same ol’ BS presented in a new costume. It’s not open source, it’s not transparent-most people cant reverse it and will never know what they downed. Folks must trust again and have faith in authorities-that’s not the spirit. Users of this format will also be bound again to one platform, others will be excluded -again. It’s easy to see where this leads.
So if you’re really serious about it those devs shall publish their code so that people can see and don’t have to believe. Otherwise mininova better get rid of these clowns b/c their oldfashioned, incompetent style will do more harm to mininovas rep than good. mininova’s not just a bunch of sharers, it’s a brand, mininova has value, I will tell my grand kids from this idea.[sic!]
And when I take off my suits I friggin wear your T-Shirts!
exes are simply the bane of content distribution. this way, cross platform playability is an issue, and the tech is limited to a select group, on a select platform, which is effectively boxing in bittorrent’s openness.
sure there are commercial prospects here, but exe’s won’t cut it. why not just extend a container format to support those features? and let trusted 3rd party players handle what they do best. VLC for instance. let the players in on the take, and let headers define the content distributor. that way code wont need to be downloaded over and over.
ads can be placed on letterbox margins, or as overlays, and on pause screens.
yo muther fuckers, f-f-f-fuckers,
vote for the G, the muther fucking G
yea thats me, the muther fucking G…………………
…………stupid
It is not o.k. and i’m very sad because i always download movies at work(where i have a good internet connection, time, etc…),and i see them at home(no internet connection, kids,no conditions,etc.).So it wiil be impossible for me to watch movies on line !
doesn’t seem like a very good idea…
it’ probably never going to succeed.
I agree with 99.9% of the people here, and EXE is a really bad idea. But I would also point out to those who complain about ads in their content that you are probably watching it anyway. Every TV show I download has a TV Station logo embedded in the corner. This is advertising. Most have an overlay message along the bottom after the removed commercial breaks, and this is advertising too (usually for something I can’t get as I am in the UK. The thing is, if these were replaced with some locale-focused alternative it would not change the viewing experience at all. A bug in the top corner advertising Woolworths, or Coke instead of NBC or CNN would help fund free content and allow a lot of us to be semi-legal
But an alternative to the EXE format would need to be found. Why not an automated mirroring system so that based on your locale you get a country specific version of the media. Easy to do just from IP address I would have thought.
Just my 2c
@Jim: BBC has no logo. No advertising = win.
Crandom, but the BBC isn’t free anyway. It is bought and paid for by the UK television license. I guess it could be delivered ad free to UK residents, and with ads overseas. This probably would not happen though as advertising is strictly against the BBC charter, and the BBC Trust would most likely not allow it. Besides which it would conflict with their DRM-riddled iplayer program.
What about subtitles?
Has anyone noticed that this .EXE is powered by VMWare ThinApp? If you do your homework, you will see that its an application virtualsation technology which automatically SANDBOXES the running app. Therefore viruses etc can’t get into your active operating system. This makes this solution SAFER than installing programs to your PC.
Since this is a VMWare product, logic will also tell you that it can technically run on Linux and MAC, since VMWare is also supported on these platforms.
Sure there is the issue of having to load VMWare on those OS’es, but then again, I’d dare say that most people have it running anyway since statistically, most apps available today are Windows apps.
Also, a thing about trust.
Your whole life is based on trust. You trust everything and everyone you ultimately connect with or communicate with. Life simply cannot operate or evolve without trusting someone or something.
I trust Mininova, have so for years. And will coninue to do so simply because they’ve earned it. I know I can trust their technical expertise, and I am sure they will find the right balance for them, the download community (existing downloaders and the new breed of downloaders coming) and the content publishers.
Keep up the innovation Mininova, your onto something good here.
I think its a step in the right direction, Ive always felt that media companies should be working with p2p networks and not against. My major concern isnt viruses. If you cant trust your local bitorrent tracker, then who can you trust?
I know this is just a technological test, however be weary of people who may try and capitalize on the idea (not saying you will, but others may).
As pretty much above, although I will say that if Ads help, then go ahead and give us ads.. I have no quarrels with that.. The reason my shows don’t have ads is because folk strip ‘em.. If they didn’t I’d watch ads.. Simple as.
But the exe thing.. Guys, come on..
Folk are f’ing stupid!
If “The general public” learn that exe = A THE MOVIE, we all know what’ll happen.
Don’t do it!!
DONT DO IT!!
Make a flash thing, strap in adverts, simple as..
Even Simpler.. Use torrents, put adverts in.
Even Simplierer.. Use torrents, place GOOD ADVERTS as seperate files in the torrent, wait and see who watches ‘em.
A good advert’s always good to watch.. See about 10% of the most popular YouTube vids.
nice to hear dat….
hoping it will be release as soon as possible…
Even if they do get good feedback, people aren’t going to want to download an exe which can be tainted by a 3rd party and re-uploaded. Although if there was a type of verification system they implemented on the mininova for the Hyper MP’s. Plus why would you want to download something with ads if there’s products with ads that are the same number of clicks away? Maybe higher quality. But that’s really not a big deal most releases aren’t bad quality.
I won’t use it, won’t, won’t, won’t…
people if someone had of said twenty years ago we would be downloading films off a thing called the internet u would think there nuts. it could be good or bad. if u dont like it dont use it stick to what u know.
I don’t get it how is it that different to downloading normal torrents what advantages are there in this, isn’t downloading torrents free already and if your talking not in torrent form then how is this going to be legal for your sake? Downloading a straight film is completely illegal as far as I know.
GRACIAS POR OFRESER LO MAS NITIDO MUSICA PARA MIS OIDOS
YPELICULAS PARA MI VICION BUENA HONDA
this is a disaster. please dont do it.
sad for all those new changes
Users are already stupid. Just because you say it’s trusted eventually psycologically they will click a link because they think they saw that it wasn’t a virus or 100 percent safe. Seriusly this is such a bad idea I don’t even know where to start.
I think you might wanna listen to the flash idea and see if you can work something out there.. cause this sounds HORRIBLE.. I’m an IT guy, I switched to a Mac around 3 years ago and I tell everyone who is not tech savy to not download .exe files unless they know exactly what they are.. this will just wreak havoc if it works, but I´m pretty certain it won’t.. I applaud you for trying to shift to legal downloads, but you really need to find a new, less dangerous way.
I’m with the nays.
Nice post. Thank you for the info. Keep it up.
Это действительно в точку!!! Другими словами и не скажешь!
makes you think how much money mininova will be making out of this deal
thanks I am a disabled person so i spend lots of time on my own so i use your films for company thank you for your good service take care

Thank you
I’M ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH Crandom, this is a kind of restricted format.
Do you ever heard about OGM?
Sorry, but since I use Internet I’ve learned not to trust in any .exe, and I have to trust in Mininova .exes?
How my Antivirus and firewall will know the Mininova´s exes aren´t trojans?
HOW CAN WE GONNA SHARE THIS .EXES WITH FRIENDS? HOW CAN I CONVINCE THEM TO USE IT, IF ANYONE KNOWS THAT EXES ARE DANGEROUS?
Copying dakira: “exe files are generally bad, but if you get them from mininova it is okay” This is dangerous. And you shouldn’t have to trust Mininova.
Who has problems with codecs since VLC exists? It´s absurd.
@Niek: your “If you don’t like it, don’t use it” sounds really really bad.
A REALLY BAD, BAD, BAD IDEA.
NOT FOR LINUX? NOT INTERESTED.
Mininova tries to use our confidence to EARN MONEY, supported by Micro$oft. Bravo.
Mininova is dead. Long live to DRM exes.
BYE, MININOVA, BYE.
Go back and tell your advertisers that if they think I will trade in my Mac for a Windows box, just so I can watch their ads, they do not understand my priorities.
You can also tell them that any company who in this economy thinks they can be a success, while telling 1 in 6 if their potential customers to go f___ themselves, is a company no prudent person would ever invest in.
I like .AVI files they work on my PC, Linux secure laptop and my Macbook. I don’t like advertising in any way shape or form period. There must be a profit motive here or else why bother? Most of what is on TV is crap anyway with or without adverts. Movies are worse because they are longer. Product placement in movies and TV is the least evil. I personally know of at least a half dozen ways to introduce payloads or other annoying things into an executable by concatenation, rewriting headers and squirrly other things. If the only motive is a new revenue stream I’m not interested in participating. I’ve already wasted too much time on the subject writing this note. I have to go downsize somebody now then I’ll feel better.
tata
finalmente un programma per scaricare dei film coma si deve
Long list of comments….
ps. this will be bad
no to exe
Not in exe
I don’t trust anyone, even Google
exe files are to risky
i prefer regular video format
such as avi and divx
good luck for your project though
This is a horrible idea, although i see the potential for mininova to increase not only traffic, but to avoid costly lawyer fee’s, it is going to die and die fast.
its not a point that we go out of our way to break the law, its a fact that, i pay for the net, just like people pay for tv, i go on web pages with AD’s on them already, i cannot walk out of my house with out feeling like im still in the net, bill boards, sh*t on the back windows of cabs, the damn bus stops have ads on them now. im surprised we dont have “pop ups” as we walk down the street (let them figure that out than were doomed)
i pay my share, i cant buy every crappy production that comes out, and there are more music, movies, tv shows, and games now than there ever has been. maybe its time for BIG companies to slim down, and quit trying to sell us garbage. spend more time on inventing something innovative, something new. not repackaging old idea’s,
i say put this back on the cutting board, cut out the ads, but if you MUST have ads to generate revenue, at least than make a commercial, kill the DMR, its not gonna happen, go ahead try, and it will be stripped off in a matter of days, and redist. as a standard avi.
hell, you can get games ripped, why do you think we are not smart enough to just fix your mistakes. dont underestimate the community you have fought to keep.
the internet is supposed to be free, the internet was supposed to be a place to exchange idea’s, data, information. if you guys want to rape the internet like the rest of the companies out there go ahead, but ive supported your site since the first day it existed, and no other bt site, and provided you stand up for our right to distribute data, you will keep your community.
if i tape a show i see on the tv, im apparently committing a crime. what makes it so different if i get it from the net, and not a freind down the street with a dvd recorder, or a pvr. eventually everyone will get it. it should be about how many people see it, not how full your pockets get. i just think the mpaa and the riaa should get the f**k out of our houses, quit crying because technology has changed and they cant keep up, (considering cd prices have been FIXED for years) you guys are doing more illegal things than we the community are doing.
and get your heads out of your asses, exe’s????
nuff said.
SUper DUper BADDEst idea of filesharing history
wont even bother to download exe
PLz remove this from your site youll have negative feedbacks
and it will spread
Hell no to .exe!!!
Great work guys. I’m looking forward for this and keep up the great work!
There are certainly a lot of replies to this and many of them seem to be from normal users that are very disturbed by the “path” Mininova is taking. I know I didn’t get to read all of them, but I want to quote something that Niek said:
“And remember: you’re not forced to download this, neither will it replace an existing feature. If you don’t like it, don’t use it: it’s that simple”
So for those of you who believe that Mininova is “taking a route for the worst” and think that everyone would/should be leaving due to this, it seems that their normal torrents would still be up and running, it would just have these .exe movies. While I’m not sure if the website will go both ways and still have decent downloading speeds and whatnot (seeing as I don’t really understand the effect of implicating this new technology with ads) I just wanted to say that I will definitely not be downloading these .exe’s and will be sticking to the normal old AVI’s. =]
And still no reply from mininova.
Then it’s true. You are for the money that the ads will bring you..
