Almost two years after its launch, we have redesigned Mininova.
The new design is not completely finished yet, but you can see it in action at http://beta.mininova.org/.
We are planning to publish this new layout, which should make Mininova less complicated and easier to use, along with some new features/improvements. Some of these features are already implemented, like:
- Better “General information” of torrents.
- Redesigned Upload page.
- The download content of a torrent is shown as a folder tree (example). This tree view works best with modern browsers, which have CSS3 support. The icons we used are from the well-known Silk Icon set, made by Mark James.
- The website now uses the UTF-8 character set. That means, for example, that torrents titles can now contain Chinese characters. More interesting news is that pasting the contents of an NFO file in the torrent description works great now (example). Just paste the NFO characters from your favorite NFO viewer between [nfo] and [/nfo] tags in the description area on the Upload page.
Some sections, like the Advanced search, are not working (correctly) yet. These things will be fixed in the future. The beta page is more about showing the new design.
Before we update the main website, we want to hear your opinion about the new look. Please comment on this blog post to let us know what you think about it and what could be better. Please also report all bugs and errors you discover.

Just one minor request, I don’t mind adverts on the site but that FUCKING ANNOYING MOSQUITO “ZAP” advert is doing my fucking head in, by having that ad on your site you’re just increasing traffic because I have to press refresh to stop the fucking noise it makes.

The flash adds are one reason the site is so slow. Flash, whilst smallest in size, is extremely taxing on the server at the back end. For that reason, true power users like myself always hated it, even if the main-stream seams to be all kudos for it. If you knocked out the flash and went to jpeg or enc images for the adds, the site would load far faster, and you may then have a greater click-through on them since users would be in a better mood not having waited for 2 minutes for their pages to load fully. Stupid flash, ruining everyone’s day. That aside, I like the new layout. The show all today function is beautiful. Keep up the good work

I use mininova coz of the interface - its clean. The new one looks too crowded with the Ads on right. If its gotta be there - stop the floating.. leave it static at the top…
also it looks similar to another torrent site now… another ____nova site…
Really like the tree view - but maybe make it collapseable/expandable? The big torrent files end up looking ridicuous.
Mininova is almost perfect as it is - it need tweaking, not a major overhaul.

I agree with TripleM, but i’am already on my own site!!! (and yes actually ON it!, I love to hump my own site :D)
Those new features are perfect, the improved old features as well.
If there is something that irritates me right now, that would be the speed of site navigation.
About the ads and the whole new left side, when it is compared to that other (crappy)-site, it’s just bad!
i’m not a fan of the new redesign, however the new font/sizing you have with the torrent entries i do like, just keep the old design, and port the new font/sizing

and i think the fonts are to big, i personaly like smaller fonts, 11-12 .. sometomes 15 or what…

I don’t mean to be blunt or anything, but frankly, I much prefer the old design. The navigation bar on the left is just annoying and takes up space, and really nothing else has been changed for the better. I would much rather see the horizontal navigation remain in use and improve general readability and such from there.

Heya, just one gripe. http://beta.mininova.org/search/ladytron/5/seeds When you have a search with a category in it, the system inserts an RSS link with an unescaped & in it, causing validation to fail.

I know validation issues probably are not top priority, but it’d be cool if you could fix this.

Maybe its just me but i have to say the current mininova design looks like the new improved version of the beta. To me it seems bloated, to many colours and to large fonts. I think people are more concerned with how fast a torrent site can search and be navigated especially at the moment as mininova clearly has a larger user base than in previous years. Keep up the good work mininova crew!
i like it, but you guys needs to implement a faster front page load, i thinks thats the only critic.

I only use your site for latest and greatest. Not sure though about the new design. It comes out all funky on my side. Hate to say it, but the design you guys currently use doesn’t need imporvement. How do you redisign the wheel?

Yeah it looks good but what ya realy need is to make it so torrents display what language there in cos i’m getting sick of downloading torrents that are in spanish when they don’t say so in there name
when i try to download a film it wont play on the computer, why is this ?
i was told that maybe i need another program to run it is this true ?.

The site is very slow now. Most of the time, loading times out because the ad server is so slow. This used to be one of the best sites around, and it is now unusable. Oh well, there is always pirate bay….

i like the site. it is very helpful and organized, however i am new to the site and have many possible things to upload however when i click to upload it brings me to the screen i select the torrent i want to upload follow the instructions but when i click “upload torrent” it takes along time but nothing ever comes up the status bar says done but it shows the same screen. i am hoping a veteran of the site can reply or say something to me of what i am doing wrong or what is going wrong so i can fix it. i am trying to share and be helpful unfortunately i am unable to with out some help…
