As you might have noticed the blog and the forum have been down the last couple of days. This was because we reinstalled the whole server. We have now installed a PHP blog, WordPress, because the buggy/slow Ruby on Rails blog kept locking up the whole server.
We have also installed MySQL 5 which still doesn’t work with the forum we use. We have mailed Invision Power Services to ask about this because their website has been saying “news on MySQL 5.x support coming soon.” for months now.
We will keep you updated on the forum…
Awesome stuff, nice to see this is finally back. Have you considered PhPBB for your forums? Lots of hacks available and cool stuff to boot.

Hey i keep seeing all this stuff about RSS feeds and alike, whats the deal? What are they? How do you use them? how do they inhance my time at mininova? also is it just me or has mininova been abit slow lately?

phpbb is still too far behind. The next version of phpbb is looking good, but no one knows when that’s going to be released. Hacking it takes far too long, and if there’s a major security update, we have to hack it all over again.
IPB comes ready to use, with great moderation tools - something we need in light of the recent increase in spam.
The report feature that’s built into IPB is ideal…thanks to people like tansydog who report posts, we can sort out the rule-breakers as quick as possible.
But maybe vB is an option.
I’m checking the forum url everyday from time to time, but it’s offline all the time, I hope the forum is fixed soon!

phpBB isn’t as flexible and customisable (in my limited experience) as I guess the mininova guys want it to be.
I prefer it however, it’s handy and has just enough options to keep it manageable on a small scale.
Haven’t tried the RAD with ruby on rails, PHP seems to be one of the most beautiful languages I’ve yet to come across though. It’s just very handy.

We don’t run a tracker so we cannot monitor upload/download stats.
Try using Drupal it beats wordpress’ ass plus it has a lot of modules for forums,news and other stuff.

baloo41 - it’s not possible to monitor ratio on a site such as mininova which doesn’t have a tracker. It can’t be done.

That is for private trackers, whant to Make people share, and boo those that dont, with mininova being a non-private tracke, it is possable to track everyone that uses mininova, however its compleatly wasteful of resorces, when there are more important things to happen, Mininova was born on the fact that it wasn’t a private tracker, and that there were a few adds on the site to keep it free, the servers and other things are paid for, by the addvertisements, making mininova a private tracker would be stupid. in my opinion, the great thing about the site is that they dont ask for dontations to keep it going, unlike other sites, not going to mention any names **COUGH**The Pirate Bay**COUGH** it works for them and this works for mininova.
My sugestion is that if we would like to make a dontation we should be able to, however it shoudlnt be somthing thats advertised,

Awesome choice on going to WordPress. You guys won’t regret it!
However, Kubrick (the default theme) is way too overused, you guys should use something else.
I’d also suggest probably using WP-Cache 2. Since this blog is fairly popular, it’ll help with the load quite a bit.
And I bet you already have an anti-spam plugin installed, but if not, I suggest SK2 or Akismet (which comes with WP). You could even do both like I do if you wanted.
Anyway, as I said, glad to see the move to PHP and WordPress!

i know that sometimes IE and Firefox act differently towards stuff… usually IE is the one thats the problem. i use Firefox and i’ve never had any trouble from mininova

Just before I left I sent an email to the staff at MN about the forum/blog server.
Glad to see the blog is up again, using WPress is cool.
Seeing as it’s the holiday period give them time to get back an fix it, I just got back myself LOL.
2 notes to folk…
1. If your seeing the same list on MN everyday, empty your browser cache often (preferably when you exit IE or Firefox), that’ll solve your probs.
2. MiniNova has no bit-torrent tracker and is not a bit-torrent tracker, it is a Database of torrents only, please stop whinging about beeing one as it’s upsetting to most of the folk who run & use it.
I’d like to say hi to the following people… Tansydog, Crafty, Pablo, Cao Song, TRX, Azman3000, Sodium1, Cauler and all the staff at MiniNova who do all the fine work!
Lastly to those who may be concerned, I’m glad to be back and feel so much better for it. Slightly darker skinned than I was before but worth it.

Do you remove torrents after they have been on for a certain time? Because I cannot find the Final Fantasy 7 PC torrent that I was downloading. They were 4 seperate torrents, one for each PC disk, and they aren’t there anymore, if you know how I could find those, that would be useful.

Brett - torrents are deleted after they have been without seeders for a while. Maybe that happened. Try searching isohunt.com and torrentspy.com they may have what you are looking for.

- Dave - don’t know sorry, check the torrent comments and the nfo file, it may be there, or you may need to go and register at the site it originated from
-Plumster - glad you enjoyed the movie. A better copy will probably be along before too long. Unfortunately a lot of people hit and run on torrents, which affects everyone’s download speed. Thank you for seeding and setting a good example. The speed isn’t determined by the site, it depends on the people uploading. If you have forwarded your ports and sorted out your firewall so that your torrent client has full permission to access the internet and act as a server then it’s probably just slow torrents. You could try enabling encryption in utorrent or azureus, that may help your speeds if your ISP is throttling bittorrent traffic.

Paul - if you search google for a specific query and add mininova to your search terms then view their cached results (not the live link, the ‘cached’ one underneath the info) you can see old posts in text format.

That’ll take your breath away. It seems the BBC is really serious about protecting Doctor Who. Opinion: If, on the other hand, they wanted to actually SELL more of those DVD’s they should 1] make everything available; 2] charge a reasonable price like everyone else in the industry.

Anyone else having problems with the new Azureus at all? Dunno if my testimonial is there from years back but for the first time I have had to install uTorrent as for some reason the new releases of Azureus keep crashing the router locking the connection, never had this problem and SF are puzzled too.
