Some time after we started mininova there were a few people that thought that uploading spam torrents would be a good idea to advertise their “GET A FREE XBOX 360” links (or PSP, or HDTV, or well you get the point ;)).
At this time we banned 3651 people (some of which are people who received multiple bans). To see if some country has more (persistant) spammers than others, I decided to compare some statistics.
If you compare these percentages with the number of visitors:
You notice France ( 
) doing a great job and Germany probably has a few nasty spammers 
(or they have more of those “free stuff” sites).
These stats actually prove nothing but hey, statistics are always fun :).
The piecharts are generated using the cool php script from peters1.dk. (Gnuplot, which is used for all the graphs on mininova.org, doesn’t support piecharts)

I think there are a lot of German visitors in that 41% group. I guess you are just using the Hostname, and not a Geolocation database, to determine the origin of your visitors. Don’t forget to count the .t-dialin.net visitors as German visitors.

Mininova should pay more attention to private trackers. I’ve reported a number of trackers and new torrents still do not have the appropiate icon …
If you are banned you can’t upload torrents anymore, you will get a message to contact one of the admins to get unbanned (if you think you don’t deserve the ban). You can mail or contact us using IRC :). So the only restriction you get is you can’t upload torrents anymore.
You Should Allow fakes and spam.
If this method of file share becomes to stable and reliable they will shut it down. notice bearshare and gnutella are still going strong.

Please note this ban is only for mininova, NOT for any private tracker you might be a member of. And ONLY for submitting torrents (so it has nothing to do with your ratio for example…)
The rules of this site are clear. Ban them if needed. Im not a fan of spam, I get about 100 spam emails a day in one of my emails. We dont need it.

I think it can be explained by the fact that Bittorent is mostly only known in France by true Internet afficionados, not by the suckers who try to spam other people …

I think Mininova is conning us. There is an obvious link with shareware providers as we are seeing file extensions for .daa an .rar becoming more prevalent. If there is a kickback to mininova which is sucking broadband from legitimate users it is time 4 Mininova to come clean. I did not have this difficulty with the Pirate Bay so is Mininova helping the authorities?

I solved my problem by keep trying every few seconds to login.
Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
If you get the message that you are banned, just try again in 10seconds or so.

i think that banning those that give torrents with passwords should be banned or if it needs a password tell us so i don’t use up my allocation. also if a site said somthing that you find offensive then don’t read it. This is a mix-up I think. Mininova is a good torrent tracker but people with AOL and the likes are being banned for other peoples tactics.

Let me relate a different issue that subsquently got me banned. I download a torrent of music that I found on another torrent site (not mininova). After the download was complete, I discovered that the rip had severe quality issues (skips on almost every song). I had seen a couple of postings that there were skips, but I thought perhaps a few of the songs might be okay (after all, isn’t it usually just a couple of songs most of us are after).
This sites policy in reporting a bad torrent was much the same as mininova. Leave a note about the problem, describe the problem, no flaming etc. If several people request that the torrent be removed then it is automatically. I posted the note as noted, explained the problem, advised other users that there were quality problems and request that others ask that the torrent be removed. In no way absolutely did I ever flame the torrent submitter or make and reference at all. The subject was only about the quality of the rip.
I was banned. Probably I am guessing that I asked other people to request it to be removed so that others don’t keep downloading a poor quality torrent. I suppose I shouldn’t made that request and just report a poor quality rip. When I checked the site today the torrent is still running strong, it hasn’t been updated.
So much for trying to do the right thing.
The only AOL users that get caught are those that use the AOL software to surf the torrent sites, many AOL users don’t understand that they can use IE or equivcalent to piggy back on the AOL connection so sit there and wait for their accounts to show up.
Speaking of being virused, I found the Virtua Girl 2 was hit by something nasty but all I did was port my docs and progs and reinstall, took about 35 minutes to have a nice fresh machine.
What I have noticed though is the proliferation of the WinFixer type ads, thats whats pissing me off and if I had the skill nowadays would be hitting those sites hard blowing their servers, now theres a worthy target for the script kiddies and chip crankers out there, kill WinFixer!!!

Banning is at the perogative of the site admins/creators. This is a community, you may equate spamming and bad file dropping as “taking a dump in the public pool”. We need something in place to keep the quality up and the idiots down. I for one thank our MiniNova overlords.

Spam is unnecessary and pointless, in the case of various emails, they just get blocked. Maybe if some users didn’t abuse the privilege provided by MiniNova and similar sites, including the free ones, then there would be no need for bans/glines/klines/host-blocking etc.
