New Frontpage: As you might have seen we have changed the frontpage. The reason for this change is the incease in bandwith usage. Which is cause by the increasing number of torrents uploaded per day combined with the number of visitors which enters the site through the frontpage.
The old frontpage was an average of 150 KB (smaller in the morning, larger in the evening). With 750.000 pageviews on the frontpage, it used 107 GB per day! This is 1,27 MB per second!
The new frontpage is only 35 KB which results in 0,2 MB per second.
We are paying for a 70 mbit connection (8,75 MB per second).
As you can see in this graph this isn’t enough at the end of the day (when the frontpage gets larger than 220 KB).
This is also the reason why mininova got slower in the evenings.
We hope everybody understands this and likes the new frontpage. If you don’t you can use the today page.
Edit (Niek): Added a “show all of today” link under each category, for easier navigation.
Edit (Erik): Added a “Use the today page as my frontpage” setting to the settings page. Setting this option makes your frontpage the same as the old frontpage was.
Search Cloud (Erik): There is now a mininova search cloud. It contains the most searched words of the day. The words get bigger when they are searched for more often. The cloud is empty at the start of the day and will grow as the number of search increases for the day.
Visual passwords (Erik): I have added a cool example for visual passwords to the mininova labs. Don’t worry, we won’t use it for mininova.
Improved search performance (Erik): I have managed to increase the speed of the search queries by almost 400% using a temporary table. The bad thing is that this table is updated only once every hour, so new torrents can take up to 1 hour to show in the search results. The good thing is that we won’t have to buy a new database server because of this.
Now I have to wait twice for the page to load (more bandwidth). Stupid ads take 45sec to load.
Please more the focus from the search box to the torrent field, that would be useful.
You can also keep a little test log to search which modes are being used most frequently.
Some most always use the seeds mode to view what is popular today. To see what is most stable to download. You can decrease the number of pageviews if you standard set a certain mode.

One more idea is to have the new style categories in order of seeders then leachers then date. The reason being (1) make effective use of the smaller space (2) users who check the site often are after the most popular releases (3) weed out seederless torrents

Its a very good idea to make the front page small since most ppl use the search right away. But the front page is pretty useless now. I think no one would mind if it just had 6 links on it (todays movies, todays games, todays music and so on). It would save you even more bandwith. Or maybe just the most popular todays torrents, maybe the ones over 500 or 1000. I noticed in the cloud that the most popular searches are the TV shows from that day (Battlestar, Lost, 24 and so on) And they always have over 1000 peers so it would lower the serching ALOT.
Much better and I see alot of people still like refusing change. I only use Search and so never use the today page.
Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve been seeing the same 10 torrents in the Anime category for the last couple days, so I still have to click on the “show all of today” link wasting even more bandwidth. I don’t particularly mind the new page, but as most users have already requested, I think a category based frontpage would be most effective. For me, I usually download Anime and TV Shows, so there’s no reason for Software, Music, Other, or Movies to load. So yeah if you could add some type of option, in the settings menu to do this that would be most effective. I’m not sure how you would achieve this for non members though. Maybe some type of cache files that would save settings for the page. Meh!!! My 2 cents.

I would love it if there was some way to get a personalized version of the today page that would use fewer downloads. I almost never use mininova for anime, music, software, or non-PC games, so I’d be happy to see those categories get dropped off of the homepage (or the today page or whatever). As it is I’m getting served a lot of bandwidth that I ignore completely.
As far as the new front page goes, I like to make sure I haven’t missed things, so I just updated my bookmark to go to the today page.

i don’t really like it that only the top 10 downloaded torrents in each category make the front page now…other torrents can’t get time on the front then. it should stay the top 10 latest uploaded.
