New Frontpage: As you might have seen we have changed the frontpage. The reason for this change is the incease in bandwith usage. Which is cause by the increasing number of torrents uploaded per day combined with the number of visitors which enters the site through the frontpage.
The old frontpage was an average of 150 KB (smaller in the morning, larger in the evening). With 750.000 pageviews on the frontpage, it used 107 GB per day! This is 1,27 MB per second!
The new frontpage is only 35 KB which results in 0,2 MB per second.
We are paying for a 70 mbit connection (8,75 MB per second).
As you can see in this graph this isn’t enough at the end of the day (when the frontpage gets larger than 220 KB).
This is also the reason why mininova got slower in the evenings.
We hope everybody understands this and likes the new frontpage. If you don’t you can use the today page.
Edit (Niek): Added a “show all of today” link under each category, for easier navigation.
Edit (Erik): Added a “Use the today page as my frontpage” setting to the settings page. Setting this option makes your frontpage the same as the old frontpage was.
Search Cloud (Erik): There is now a mininova search cloud. It contains the most searched words of the day. The words get bigger when they are searched for more often. The cloud is empty at the start of the day and will grow as the number of search increases for the day.
Visual passwords (Erik): I have added a cool example for visual passwords to the mininova labs. Don’t worry, we won’t use it for mininova.
Improved search performance (Erik): I have managed to increase the speed of the search queries by almost 400% using a temporary table. The bad thing is that this table is updated only once every hour, so new torrents can take up to 1 hour to show in the search results. The good thing is that we won’t have to buy a new database server because of this.
Ummm i dont see anything diffrent about the front page so sure ^_^ lol
Bad idea
Great with the new frontpage - no prob. However, it would be nice if there was a link for each category(of which now the 10 latest torrents are shown), that would show all the torrents in the category from 00.00 hours - thanks
C’est Naze !!
Is there any way to get a “Today” or “Yesterday” list of only one category?
For example, is there a way to list only today’s music torrents?
I dont like it. i’d liked the old one ^^ it was clearer. =)
I hate it…..I support the idea loyal user proposed ( a today/yesterday list of one category)
This one is confusing…….
Yea i liked the old one better, but what has to be that has to be ^_^
It’s not really a good idea. Now it’s harder for the user to get their torrents!.. Instead of viewing the whole page of today’s (or yesterday’s) torrent and get what you want from Programs, movies, music…etc, you now have to brwose each category separately!
like it;)
Yeah, no problem with the new frontpage, looks good. But like Busybuddy said, it would be nice of there was a link for each category (of which now the 10 latest torrents are shown), because that way we can still see al the torrents in the category from 00.00 hours. You think that would be possible? by the way keep it up with the site, great job!!=D=D
Yea old one was better , but if this increases performence why not. Mininova is slow as hell though….:/
I liked the old version!!!
Is it possible to create (in the new page) a kind of buttom witch opens up an other page with the last 24h added files (for each category) ?
The TOTAL overview was better, I think.
But Mininova’s explanation tells me enough. It’s a clever solution. Maybe you can change it for loggged-in people :
ONLY SHOW POSTS FROM LAST TIME VISITED (with a maximun of xxx)
I second that. Most people won’t be interested in all categories but would want all from selected categories. Which would be possible if each category would have its own page…
I’ll take a look at “Loyal User”’s idea.
By the way: looking at our statistics, the majority of our visitors directly enters a search term after visiting the frontpage.
it would be nice if you had some program to clear out the 0 seeds and the duplicates then you wouldn’t have 700+ torrents to search per day mininova rocks no matter how you fix it best thing since sliced bread
Raad, frenchmen: The today page (http://www.mininova.org/today/) is the same as the old frontpage. — Busybuddy, Tom: We will add a “link for each category” feature soon, just don’t have the time right now. — em: It isn’t slow here. — joeblow: you can hide the 0 seeder torrents with your personal settings (you need to login)
The link to today’s and yesterday’s torrents of the same category is a great idea indeed… Sounds like the next best solution
You’d save as much space if you let the visitor get a personalized frontpage.
For my own, I just look Movie, TV Shows and sometimes Music. I wouldn’t care not to see software, games and so on…
how about using the link at the top of each section to take you to a list of torrents for that section per day rather than the total list? i am sure that most people check daily and they could click on a set of links at the top of the page to go to a total list for that section.
….
should be a seperate link for todays, im here several times a day looking for new torrents, how can i now find the latest? its eaysier to find your torrents for example if you follow a tv- series and you can just check for a new episode instead of doing a search 15 times a day! other then tank you mininova for a great torrent site!
Hiya,
First off all, thank you, I love Mininova.
Second, the new frontpage is great, and if it saves time and upload, even better.
Hope you continue your amazing work, and again, thank you
Royal
It’s shit.
It’s horrible!
You know, I do understand the necessity for lowering bandwidth, but I have an idea. How about instead of giving us only the 10 last uploaded, you give us links to each category.
THe problem with this idea you’re using now is that if I want to make sure I don’t miss a torrent in a particular category - which I usually don’t - I’ll just go from this front page to the “today” page, thus actually *increasing* your bandwidth rather than the other way around. If I were to get a link that lead directly to the different categories, I wouldn’t get a list of all the others that I might not be interested in.
I hope that makes any kind of sense …
hi look ok to me if you want film i say look for it keep the good work up
I like it! Maybe it is an option to add the first five populair (= most seeded) downloads of each catagory. So you don’t need to click through to get the show’s last episode. Saves more bandwith i guess. And it’s handy!
And please don’t go torrentspy’s way. Caus that side realy sucks!
kira: as I said, the majority of the visitors don’t even check the frontpage, they go directly to the search page. So no way this will increase our bandwidth. We’ll add a “all of today” link under each category soon
I think mininova users should be grateful for every download we ever made. If you’re having problems with speed, it’s ok. We’ll get used to it. And I’m thankfull for every download I have made. Keep on the good work. I realy don’t mind one more click to see today’s selection.
Hi,
first of all, thanks alot for giving us the pleasure using Mininova.
Maybe it’s a good idea to make links to the different categories.
Or for instance once a week a list of all new Torrents from that week !
Anyhow keep up the good work
thanks
absolute agree with Busybuddy - Link for each category would be nice!
Great idea, now I load the smaller front page, and then the full Today-Page. Cant see a point in bandwidht savings here. Personally I would prefer a system “by category” as I was never interested in Anime, rarely in books or music.
Volcanina: maybe you load the full “today” page, but 75%+ of the visitors directly go to the search page.
We added a “show all of today” under each category, just like you guys suggested.
Now I can’t sort torrents by seeds/leachers.
it’s an improvement but I think you went about it wrong, a lot of people probably only want to search for a specific thing and arn’t bothered about the latest torrents, the frontpage should display say the most popular torrents (10 for each cat) for the past 24hrs (that means the latest 24, lost, sg-1, 0-day software etc. will be there for lots of people) and then have a pull down menu for catergory and time period 24rs, 48hrs, 1 week etc. aswell as also have links to the today and yesterday page.
also do you have a firefox search bar because if not you should, that would cut your bandwidth bills a little as people wouldn’t need to load the homepage.
Lol most of you guys are lazy. Cant spend an extra min to look seperatly?
Will it be possible to have many different “today pages” for every categories ?
It will reduce the amount of data I will download as long as I am only interested in some categories.
Thanks a lot for your work.
That wasn’t a easy thing to do but we will all understand.
whoooaaahhh, 107GB/day for one html page, jesus, I can fully understand why these changes have been made. In my opinion they have not affected functionality in the least.
Keep up the good work peeps, I bow down to your infinite torrent wisdom,
Mininova ROCKs!!!!!!
@niek
show all of today - well that is not the way to go if you want to save bandwith… the link under each category should only list the today torrents of that category… and not the whole today-page…
@Majto: perhaps, but this is easier for the user (for example: if they want to check all Movies and Music torrents) AND it is easier to cache (server side).
I don’t like it, but hey…whatever ya gotta do to keep the site functional.
hey this is good and easy to figure out, and im a simpilton i cant even spell good and i get it.
keep up the good work.
I like the new frontpage a lot. It’s much quicker to load, and that can only help. I would like to second though, that it would be great to be able to click a “Show all TV Shows today” or “Show all Music today” and “Show all Movies yesterday” link. I’m not interested in every category, and it’s simply a waste of bandwidth to load them all every time I hit the back button (which is quite a few times a day ;o)
Great job on the page though guys. Please keep up the good work, you feed my addictions
this interface is much much better..
i really dont check every section so
its really great that i can now click and find out whats new only in those section..
that i really like..
good job guys…
Niek,
Okay, then that’s good. I didn’t mean that the change would necessarily increase bandwidth in total - just me and perhaps a few others who DO check the frontpage and then want to see all in one category. But since you’re adding “See all of today” for each category, I’m happy and the front page works fine for me otherwise
Sweet
maybe there should be an option to see the rest of each category, that would be cool
yeah mininova i like it you rock keep it up
imo this is a bad move, cuz alot of ppl will click on to today and yesterday, which results in more bandwith usage, loading the current frontpage + today page which was frontpage before ..
MooZ: no a lot of people search from the frontpage and don’t care about which torrents are uploaded. We can already see a great drop in bandwith: http://www.mininova.org/graphs/datagraph.png
Is it possible to keep the same order of the categories as on the old page?
I like the new frontpage, I also enjoyed reading explaination, extremely cleaver decision. Congrats. To whose who disagress, I think it is a natural reaction, people tend to be slow to adapt to new things.
Not sure if it’s just a firefox problem, but i get a “no torrents found” message when i try to expand a list to “show all of today”
BTW, if I may suggest, could we make a special category for French or Mexicans because, although they don’t have or know TVO, they do put some stuff in their language, such as Poliska, which I enjoy every much indeed, but can be confusing.
I care about only .. Movies and tvshows.
can I just see these categories ?
this will help u with the bandwidth thing !
“show all of today” is a good solution.
thanks
the “Today” page doesn’t update as quick as the new front page.
eg: last game upped @00:40 on fp
and last game upped @00:28 on today
At first I was gonna cry because I thought you guys were going the torrentreactor route, but now I see your reasoning.
I’d like the option to be able to search and “Show torrents uploaded in the last 24 hours/36 hours/96 hours/5 days/10 days/20 days/30 days/2 months/6 months/all time” option (additional drop down box). Then I can bookmark a search request for all the shows I like and just keep reloading that page every couple of days to see if there is anything I’m after.
I’d like it if I could download the torrents directly from the front page into my brain. That way, I could watch what I wanted in my brain, instead on my screen. Could someone arrange that?
…but seriously, Mininova? you do an awesome job…so do whatever you want.
very good, i see positive thinking here.
It sucks, most of the stuff I download has higher leechers and seeds and I found it easily before by sorting by leechers/seeds, but I can’t do that now.
I preferred the way it was… but also, would be great to have more settings in our profiles… for example, only to display given cats.
Keep up the great work!
What program generated that graph?
http://www.mininova.org/graphs/datagraph.png
In order to minimize the bandwidth usage, the “Show all of today” link must have single a category.
just changed my bookmark to mininova.org/today/ :p
There’s got to be a better solution. only 10 torrents per category is not working for me. Maybe personalized homepages with only the user’s favorite categories shown (kinda like google’s personalized homepage, I mean)?
I don’t like the new one
I have another idea: you could only show the new torrent since the last visit. This feature was already on the frontpage, but the new one were in bold. Now you could change the code to only show those new torrent instead of the entire “today” section with the new one in boldand the rest without bold.
we’ll get used to it
There should be an option to see in the today/yesterday section only the categories we are interested in. If the same could be done for the RSS feed then it would save even more bandwidth.
Yeah some way to tailor the mainpage would be perfect…I’m sure if users only saw the fresh updates for the categories they’re interested in you could reduce the bandwidth significantly.
I know I personally only ever look at TV and sometimes movies, don’t even glance and the animie/pictures/other crap.
This sucks. Change it back. If you wanna save bandwidth, optimize your HTML for size.
i think you should make something like
“Today Top 10″
your way definately will not save you BW.3
Now this is awesome. GJ =)
“OMG I HAVE TO CLICK MY MOUSE A COUPLE MORE TIMES, OR USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION! HOW DARE YOU MAKE ME USE MY FINGERS MORE THAN I NEED TO! YOU SUXX!!!” Jeez!… Nobody likes change, especially when they aren’t consulted. But trust, after a while everyone will get used to it and then they’ll wonder what the hell they were complaining about. If it benefits the site then it can only be a good thing. Tweak away, just don’t go overboard
love the site
Guys, simply, i hate the new front page. I understand your position, so i do not hold it against you. However i would like the feature that allows you to see the most seeded torrents re-enabled, that was the only benefit of the old front page.
@Nubcake: I don’t see the problem. The old page is still there (http://www.mininova.org/today/). You can sort that page, do everything you want it to do, just like you was used to.
Saves bandwith, good idea.
but show all daily for categories would be the ducks nuts.
ps # john said about 13 hours later
This sucks. bla bla bla….
Is just a farcken idiot.
I hate it to see only last 10, i got to say worthless im sorry!!!
By the way, I liked the new page, it’s a lot cleaner and a lot faster to load.
@Niek: Thanks for that, didn’t know about it.
10 torrents at a time? mininova.org/today ’s the way to go.b
i think its okay, i just have to get used to it.
i think that there should be links to sub categories with the latest torrents there, cuz if im looking for the latest, say, metal releases, i sdont wanna be looking at dance music. narrowing down like that would also save some bandwidth (albeit not much)
Showing only 10 is silly; EVERYONE will just click on the “show all” link, thereby INCREASING server load (load the “latest ten” page, then load the ~entire~ page)…
im sure your logs show a significant increase already.
switch the main page to a “In the Last 8 hours…” or maybe “the last 12 hours”.
This will balance everyone’s needs nicely.
poipoipoi: Our logs already show a decrease by almost 50%. Most people don’t care what’s on the frontpage, they only want to search.
It sucks
While it threw me the first time I saw it, change does that
I quite like it as it makes the front page less cluttered as it get later in the day and I understand the need to minimise bandwidth where possible. However, like others have said, a link, perhaps the category heading itself or a row of links across the top of the page to access all the days entries for a particular category would be cool. For like many there are categories I am not interested in. For example I usually look daily in the today’s entries for Books and TV Shows while I look through Software and Movies and sometimes Music using search. Thus being able to go to a days TV Shows or Books directly from the front page would be neat and would save some bandwidth and would probably mean you could reduce the amount shown on the front page even more, even eliminating any entries there totally apart for links to the various categories Today entries.
By the way when I use the search function I normally don’t visit the Site initially as I have pasted the Search script from your FAQ page to a html file on my Desktop so that I don’t even access your site until I have entered the search term and clicked the search button.
P.S. Still the best torrent site out there.
Hello,
The change of the frontpage is a good idea but when you’re registred, on the old one, the new torrents were writen in bold caracters and in this new version the new ones are writen as the others.
Could you, pls, return with the bold caracters system?
Sorry for my english, I’m french.
Than you.
I agree with those who suggested a page for each category’s torrents from today. I’m only interested in TV and Movies, no need for me to see all of the other categorys.
I miss the “sort by seeds” feature…plz!
You should clear out the frontpage completely except for “show $category today”.
I think a lot of people only care for 2 or 3 cats anyway.
wow, I like the way this blog work. homemade or template I could use?
It’s a good idea to help save bandwidth, except for one–for lack of a better word–”flaw” with the system. When a user clicks “Show all of Today,” it should only reveal the rest of the list for that ONE section, not for all sections.
This way, a user can only see the sections he/she is interested in, and mininova can save even more bandwidth.
Keep up the great works fellas!
Hi i’m a long time mininova visitor.
First of all i want to thank you for the excellent work you’ve done till now. really, thank you!!
Next i like to suggest (if i’m allowed to) something about your RSS feed.
instead of having a big feed with all torrents inside, a good idea could be in splitting the feed in more parts specific for the category which every torrent belongs to. For Example :
1: mininova blog (the admin speaks) which is already separated.
2: music
3: anime
4: games
5: movies
6: pictures
7: tv shows
in this way you can keep track of the things you are really interested. for example if i’m only interested in music and tv shows, i can skip everything that concerns games - pictures- anime. This has 2 main advantages first of all, the bandwidth used for the rss feeds should be less than before and second one the user has a more detailed selection of torrents.
Has anyone else had their “New torrents on today Bold” setting break since the new frontpage was released? This feature no longer works for me — and I’ve made no changes to my firefox install that would account for it. I loved this setting, it was the main reason I ever bothered logging in. Am I the only one with this problem / can it be fixed?
I only look for TV torrents. I would prefer that the “Show all of today” link correspond to the category it’s under. For example, if I click on the link under the TV section, show me only the TV shows for the day.
*** WHILE I UNDERSTAND your concerns, this makes the service so difficult to use that I might stop coming after doing “daily torrents” for 2 years (suprnova, then mininova).
I understand for the “today” page.
But can the “yesterday” page still be the complete she-bang?
I’m going to load it ALL, no matter what. The question is: Do you want me to do a refresh for each category, or just load once?
Faste and Furious !
@Drew: It was working yesterday after the install of the new frontpage, but has stopped working for me tonight. Using Firefox as well. I’m hoping it’s just a glitch, because it was a great feature.
What can I say but thanks once again as it is really nice to see a site that responds so quickly to requests by users. I say this as I have just noticed the Today and Yesterday link on the front page as well as the Show All Today at the bottom of each category taking you to the top of that particular category on the complete Today page which does me fine.
Sorry, I don’t like it:
1) almost everyone will click the “Show All Today” link, which ends up causing your initial issue to return (bandwidth), and in the process, also annoy the user, as he must now click an extra time for what he used to see automatically.
2) it does away with the bold font which used to highlight new links added since last visit - this was extremely appreciated.
I would prefer the “Show All Today” link to only affect a single category, but then I would still always click it under the categories I am interested in. The best alternative, to me, would be to have user settings whereby you can pick your front page settings (for example, I *never* look at Anime, yet it’s always there, up front and first, for me to pass over. Likewise for most of the others, as I really only look for TV.
Hope this helps,
well i think that one of the things that should be in place is an option for those that log in, wich is to select the amount of torrents showen for the page, such as i may only want to see the last 10 and some one else may only want to see the last 5 or some one else wants to see the last 25, i think for those that log in it should be an option, but besides the point the guys are doing great with the site and thats all that matters, if they can make small changes to affect the total bandwith that we use, thats always a plus in my book, and one last thing, thanks for the adverts its keepin it free, click on the adverts,
Reckon it should be in the order fo the most seeded- but other than that, great!
“it would be nice if there was a link for each category(of which now the 10 latest torrents are shown), that would show all the torrents in the category from 00.00 hours”
I second that.
Well here’s my 2 cents worth, i will always click on the ‘today’ link which shows all of them so if most ppl do a similar thing how will that decrease bandwidth?
@mayrijob: look better, the link is already there…
@Andrew: just because YOU click the today link, doesn’t mean that EVERYBODY clicks that link. Our bandwidth usage is now 50% of what it was before we changed the frontpage…
Hi erik,
I’ve seen de changes now!!!
1 day later, i’am already used to the new page…. and like it 100%. Keep up the good work
If a thing works, why being original just to be original?
love it - frontpage loads more quickly,
and makes browsing faster- best to check back every few hours - and the search cloud is a good idea.Would be good if you just see a frontpage view of the individual category when clicking the link.
I love it, it’s quicker and plus, when we click for instance on “more tv shows” it goes right there and no need to scroll down the huuuuge page anymore.
Great idea!!
why dont you post on the most seeded torrents on each section, this way people dont have to press the expand button to find their favorite download.i personally still press the exapand button because my favorite torrent is not at the top
Added a “Use the today page as my frontpage setting to the settings page. Setting this option makes your frontpage the same as the old frontpage was.
I like it, although the “Show all of today” link at the bottom of each section expands the WHOLE front page, not the section you want (eg “TV”). It’d be good if it just expanded the section it referred to, and not load the whole front page.
You need to add the names of the catagories - they’re missing - so we see 10 of each newest entries, but don’t know what type of file they are..
