The conclusion I take from these graphs is that French people only want to watch/play things which are french. Is this because they don’t understand English?
I really don’t understand this. I always hate it to see stuff which has voice-over in my own language. Especially comedies, it almost always ruins the jokes.

I don’t know why people think this but I’m not from america and yes I have learned french at my school (long time ago so I’m not that good at it anymore).
Karine: I don’t download french movies because I can’t fully understand them if they speak to fast. I always download english stuff even though that is not my native language.

i think french look for french movie because they can get it easier with the canadian version (and if they have the choice between CA or original movie they take the CA one …)

So the French like to watch foreign movies dubbed into French or with French subtitles, the Spanish do a similar thing and the Brits and the Americans (mostly) only watch movies in English? Big deal.
If you want to learn a foreign language, go ahead. If you don’t, does this make you insular or a racist? Probably not. Does it make you lazy? Maybe, who knows (and who really cares)?
What makes all of the nations in the world interesting is our differences. The world would be a boring place without the French, the Americans, the British, the Italians, etc. but maybe not the Canadians… that was a joke!
All nations have their problems. The Brits (I’m a Brit by the way) have a high opinion of themselves. The Americans are fat. The French don’t wash. The Greek men have facial hair like their Mothers. The Germans are humourless. The Italians are gangsters. The Irish are drinkers… but isn’t this just all media induced generalisations and sweeping statements based on past hatred of each other handed down over the generations?

A person from Britain is different from a person in France or Italy or The Republic of Ireland or Germany or Holland, etc.

A person from Earth is (probably) different from any other planet in the Universe that contains life.
The word here is “different” not “better”. It is our differences that make us interesting and unique and great.
It’s a shame that we all don’t get along but that’s human nature for you I suppose (or is that a generalisation too?!!). Maybe one day we will get along… or maybe we’ll just all blow the hell out of each other (and I don’t mean sexually!), destroy the planet completely. It would certainly resolve the issues we seem to have.
Personally I’d settle for peace but maybe I’m just a Brit with a high opinion of himself?

Well, if I may give a piece of explanation to Erik ( without racism/off topic/retarded comments like I read below…), I think there are two major reasons:
- French educational system concerning foreign languages really suck, so most of french people not used to practice english after their studies will have a rather poor english, poor enough not to understand a movie;
- French dubbing is performed by well known and talented french actors (yes there are actually really good actors in France :p ). Moreover, the french language has a very rich vocabulary so interpreters/dubbers can manage to play with words and pronunciation so that you nearly forget the actors are actualy not playing in french. So the second reason is very good dubbing quality.
I forgot to mention that I am french, I enjoy french dubbed foreign movies but I prefer watching them in their original language (even languages I dont understand like japanese anime for example) because it keeps the “spirit” of the movie.

The French usually just suck at any other language then their own or are just to damn arrogant and refuse to speak any other language… we get quite a few drug tourists over here (amsterdam) and they even expect people to speak/understand french when asking for directions… only thing I learned (and probably misspelled) was: Je refuse parle en Francais.
THE ONLY GOOD THING TO COME OUT OF CANADA IN THE RECENT YEARS IS THE TRAILERPARK BOYS ,AND THEY SPEAK ENGLISH

I can speak more then one sentence, but with people who simply come to a foreign country unable to speak any other language then their own, then I refuse to speak or assist them in any way, at least learn english so you can communicate, but the french are usually to arrogant to bother with that. why doesn’t the rest of the world just speak french, would make it a whole lot easier… right.
I hang out with Francophones in the USA, and don’t have any problems with them. Most of them speak 3 languages, and I know one who speaks 6 ( I stand in awe ). We have made it a hobby to teach other other languages, like now I am learning Arabic with them and we teach each other in French. It lets me learn 2 languages at the same time since I have to understand what they are telling me about Arabic in French.
Can’t we all just get along?
First thing to say, it’s very funny to hear that french are arrogant… Escpecially from redneck american people, who really thinks they are the center of the world… Just to remember you one thing, travel and you’ll see things differently… That’ll perhaps open your mind, and if you come to france, don’t only go to paris, I can admit parisian people could be arrogant especially for other french, but travel in the rest of france you’ll meet people that’ll try to help you and so on… Paris is not france… And if we don’t speack a lot foreign language, it’s not by lazyness, it’s because we’re ashamed if we don’t know the exact terms for a sentence. So we prefer not to speack. but for strangers when you try to speack french you just don’t care if you make grammatical mistakes and so on… That’s perhaps why you think we are arrogant, because “Je refuse parle en Francais.” is not something we like to hear but “Je refuse de parler français”…
